I’ll admit I (like a lot of people I know) wasn’t exactly on board with the idea of season 6 of Supernatural. I thought that Kripke’s five season arch had told the story in completion, that it would be a hard, rough end for the Winchesters who had a hard, rough life. I went into this last season with trepidation. How could they top coming toe to toe with Lucifer?

The season started rough, as a lot of the later seasons of SPN do they make the mistake of having the brothers at odds with one another. I believe most people watch this show because of the brothers bonding against the world. We love their relationship when it’s good and the longer it’s bad the more annoyed we get. Yet, TV shows need and thrive on conflict. And in a show with really only two main characters, their only choices are the brothers.

Then, once the relationship was back, the show really heated up and reminded me, once again why I love this show. Some old faces popped up and one of my favorite episodes from season 6 harkened back to Season 2 when Dean tries to outrun a reaper. The moral questions that the boys have to answer make this more than some fantasy show about two hot guys running around in a car. It really makes me examine my own faith and thoughts on death, life and everything in between.

If you gave up on the season, pick up the DVDs and really stick it out. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the end and anxiously awaiting season 7 like I am.

Season 6 of Supernatural brought the brothers into a strained relationship as they continued to fight in an epic war between Heaven and Hell. Yet, through new monsters, new angels, new problems — the brothers stuck together (for the most part). Proving once again that no matter what happens the Winchesters are always going to think of each other first.

That’s probably one of the themes I like most in Supernatural. No matter how crazy life gets or how stupid it might seem, family sticks together. The boys are ready to go to hell and back to protect each other (literally). It’s awesome to watch just how crazy it has to get for them before they realize all they have is each other.

I’d like to think my family would be similar, but it’s hard to tell with the amount of stress and pressure the boys are under. I know if I was the Winchesters I’d want some friends along too. How about you? Who would you take along with you if you had to become a hunter?

Of course, one of the earliest surprises was Dean’s domesticality (yes, I just made that word up). Dean settled happily into a domestic life (which we saw previously that he was dreaming of for a long time). When Sam and Dean stumble across a baby it’s Dean who is at ease taking care of the kid and not the more sensitive Sam.

Not that I should have been surprised by this softer side of Dean. It’s been obvious from the get go that he’s got a soft spot for kids and, as Sam’s big brother he was cast into the role of parent early on. It reminds me of this article I once read about a rough and tumble biker adopting a baby who was super sick (and no one thought would make it past one year of age). This intense, almost scary looking man became a giant teddy bear with that girl in his arms. Same thing with “bad boy” Dean.

With the new Supernatural Anime series it’s interesting to see Jared and Jensen in a whole new, animated look. The boys still have their voices, but with slightly different looks. Of course, it fits the storyline of Supernatural perfectly. The Winchester boys change their look to explore new cases all the time (though sometimes Dean doesn’t fully get into the act).

Of course that’s got me thinking about how I would change my own look in order to explore a new world. If you had the opportunity to reinvent yourself what would you do? Dye/cut/change your hairstyle? Your clothes? I’ve often wondered if, in the future, you could do all that with a tap of a button including changing your shape/size/etc. Kind of like SIMS or Second Life in real life.

Regardless of the change on the outside though, you’re always left with the person inside and that’s why I think people who are fans of the TV show are going to enjoy the anime version. At the end of the day, the Winchesters are still the Winchesters. They’ve got their family and they got their demons.

Is it possible for good stories to be retold by different people in different settings especially?

Supernatural is getting a its own reboot, but in anime style. The new series combines and retells seasons 1 and 2 in a different way than the original TV series. It sounds promising that the creators can do what they want without fear of a budget. Without worrying about CGI and SFX (which are already amazing on the TV show) they can tell the story again in new ways.

While fans seem torn about Buffy Season 8, it seems that Season 9 might bring back some of the elements they were missing. Switching genres can be hard for fans who only know a story told in one genre (how many times have we heard book fans whine about movies being ‘told wrong’).

I for one, try to be a bit more open minded. I think good stories transcend a particular medium. Great stories can live comfortably in graphic novels, anime, books, TV, movies, heck.. even music. If the rabid fans can open their minds to a new interpretation they can really enjoy what the new story has to offer.

Want to see how it plays out for SPN? Check out this scene (that mirrors a scene in the finale of Season 2)

While Buffy and Angel are about your found family, Supernatural shows the importance of your blood family. Sam, Dean and their father are linked in a bond so tight that all three will stop at nothing to protect their family.

As much as I love found families, I really love exploring family bonds too. My family has usually been very close and, even though we’ve had our own difficulties, in times of crisis I know they’d be there for me. Just like Sam and Dean are for each other.

The TV series has been reimagined as an anime series and it looks like that focus on family hasn’t been lost in the transition.

I’m very excited to see how seasons 1 and 2 of the TV show were taken and created into this anime show.
The boys travel the US, mostly in the small backroads, searching for their mother’s killer and, in the end, the truth about their lives.

Car-centered road trips are quintessential Americana, but the idea of setting off to find yourself is esential to the hero’s journey from the earliest forms of literature. It’s easy to see why, journeys expose you to other forms of ideas, cultures, and customs that are different than your own. In the case of the WInchesters it expands their own beliefs on their morals (especially in the Season 2 episode “Bloodlust” when they’re confronted with the concept of “harmless” vampires).

Trips have always expanded my own horizon. I remember as a little girl traveling across country and realizing how different the world was from California (where I lived all my life). Other places were lush, green and covered with trees or vast, expansive deserts without a shade tree in sight.

In the end the important part of the journey is not actually the end. As we’ve learned with the SPN boys there’s always more truth to discover and more monsters to face. To risk the cliche the journey is the most important part and I can’t wait to rewatch Season 2 on Blu-Ray and enjoy the trip all over again.

It’s actually the first season of the show I watched and so it holds a special place in my heart. The special features look great (like the Devil’s Roadmap that Eric talks about in the YouTube clip above). Having just completed a rewatch through all the seasons of Supernatural (in a week I think), I jumped at the chance to write about the new Blu-ray release.

The nostalgic thing for Supernatural fans going back and rewatching Season 2 is that the episodes are more monster hunt focused rather than the big huge season arcs that, while fun, can be a bit draining. One of my favorite parts of Season 2 is the variety of monsters the boys must hunt. From vampires to killer clowns (okay, it really was a rakshasa), the season has some traditional baddies and some interesting second-stringers.

One of my favorite monsters that the brothers hunted was “The Trickster” (aka Loki), who appears in the episode “Tall Tales.” Subsequent episodes with the Trickster are always funny, kind of heart-breaking and just plain great television. Other than killing his victims, it seems appropriate that he makes jerks pay for their behavior.

Of course, watching the Winchesters fight monsters every day makes you wonder how you’d handle a situation with a monster yourself. Would you take up arms, illegally dig up graves, salt and torch bones? I don’t think I could. Mostly my strategy would be run away and find someone who could. Of course, running straight for the Winchester boys wouldn’t be a bad thing.. would it? I’ll leave the slaying to the professionals.

Non-Spoilery Review:

So far in the Supernatural season we’ve had so much about the overall arch that it was nice to take a break and do a “case of the week” type story. While the episode isn’t the highlight of the season it still cleaned up some important emotional points. Sadly it was one of the most poorly constructed (story-wise) episodes I’ve seen from Supernatural in a long time.

Episode Review:

The Curious Case of Dean Winchester started out with the scary teasers we’ve come to know and love in Supernatural. A guy ages in the bathroom and his wife finds his body with a blood curdling scream. The special effects are fantastic, though the whole cheat with the mirror was a bit obvious.

The story fell down in a lot of respects, but not for lack of great elements. I really loved Patrick (the man-witch) and thought he was a very intriguing and morally grey “villain”. He was charming, funny and smart (though apparently not as smart as he thought he was). If he returns, it’ll be all for good.

I also loved the idea of introducing the idea that immortality is not natural and how it would effect people. Though this is the part that was super confusing story-telling wise, especially with the final scene coming after Dean, Sam and Bobby being wrapped up. It’s kind of like “oh man! We forgot to explain what the deal was with Patrick’s girlfriend”. However, there was a high mistep with the whole suicide angle. Apparently only Bobby is not allowed to contemplate suicide, but Patrick’s girlfriend should go with it (or at least assisted suicide). A mixed message that could have been explained a bit better (i.e. living your natural life is the way to go).

It was also wonderful to have the family aspect back with Sam, Dean and Bobby. And to see Bobby take a misstep himself (after chiding the WInchesters so much for resorting to magic to fix their problems). I was happy with the build up to this misstep too, it was believable because of how much pain we’ve seen Bobby in since he lost his legs. Unlike some other character moments with Bobby, this one was allowed time to grow, and I appreciate it.

We’ve seen several different actors “play Dean”, and I’m sad to say the only person who could really pull it off wasn’t even actually playing Dean! The kid from Season 3′s The Kids Are Alright was really the only person who could pull it off. As much as I enjoyed the banter with old!Dean and Bobby, there was just something missing.

Speaking of old!Dean, the best exchange has to be him and the hotel maid. It’s been awhile since we’ve gotten to see cocky, flirty Dean and the added “old man” element just added to the funny. The downside of old!Dean? The ailments joke got old after the first one. It really should have stopped with the cheeseburger. We received all the info we needed out of Dean’s reaction to not being able to eat his beloved cheeseburger with extra bacon anymore.

All of this to say, it’s not the worst episode of Supernatural, but it wasn’t the best either. Mainly it’s what we’ve come to expect from a mid-season episode. It’s just one of those filler episodes that is disappointing because it had such promise. Just seems like too many folks got busy elsewhere so the script lost a lot of the tight oversight and it became kind of messy and unfocused. Kind of sad because newcomer writer Jen Klein was paired with Julie Siege, who wrote some brilliant episodes (It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester and The Monster at the End of This Book ).

I do hope Patrick returns, for a man-witch he’s not a bad guy.
