Vampire Diaries Season 2 on DVD – Lovers are for ‘Shippers

Vampire Diaries in Season 2 has enough love triangles and romances to keep any ‘Shipper (people who are fans of a certain relationship) extremely happy. They put together a lot of couples that I couldn’t really see together and some that we were pretty positive would fall apart quickly. Of course, the main lovers triangle is our lead female Elena and the vampire brothers Stefan and Damon.

It’s no deep mystery that I love Vampire Diaries mainly for Damon, the smoldering hot Ian Somerhalder was one of my favorite actors on Lost and he still brings the charm — in a very vulnerable bad boy way — to CW’s Vampire Diaries. Damon reveals in the second series that he loves Elena, but for most of the series it’s clear that Elena is conflicted and, despite a moving moment in the finale, it’s still unclear if her love is deep enough to last.

Rooting for a particular relationship is part of the fun for a lot of fans. Unrequited love, portrayed love, even couples that were together and broke up still have fans who root for them to get back together and for the world to be right again. So here I go rooting for the couple I’m sure is doomed to fail.

I’m also a fan of Jeremy Gilbert & Bonnie Bennet. Bonnie seems to not quite fit in any other pairing I can see (though those who suggest Bonnie and Damon just make me laugh). So glad Jeremy’s character grew up this last season.

How about you? Who are you rooting for in Season 3?

They turn to their unofficial consultant, Sherlock Holmes, who deduces various elements pointing to a serial killer. Meanwhile, Sherlock Holmes is introduced to John Watson, and the pair immediately move into a flat in Baker Street. John Watson slowly gets to know and trust Holmes despite a police officer warning him that Holmes is a psychopath and will one day be responsible for murder. A man who calls himself “Sherlock Holmes’ archenemy” kidnaps Watson and asks whether he’ll spy on Holmes for money, but Watson refuses. After a series of incidents, the person responsible for the deaths, a taxicab driver, reveals that his victims took their own lives by playing a game of Russian roulette with two pills: one fatally poisonous, the other safe. Watson shoots the cabbie, who reveals as he dies that Moriarty masterminded the entire plan.

Remaking Yourself (Supernatural Anime)

With the new Supernatural Anime series it’s interesting to see Jared and Jensen in a whole new, animated look. The boys still have their voices, but with slightly different looks. Of course, it fits the storyline of Supernatural perfectly. The Winchester boys change their look to explore new cases all the time (though sometimes Dean doesn’t fully get into the act).

Of course that’s got me thinking about how I would change my own look in order to explore a new world. If you had the opportunity to reinvent yourself what would you do? Dye/cut/change your hairstyle? Your clothes? I’ve often wondered if, in the future, you could do all that with a tap of a button including changing your shape/size/etc. Kind of like SIMS or Second Life in real life.

Regardless of the change on the outside though, you’re always left with the person inside and that’s why I think people who are fans of the TV show are going to enjoy the anime version. At the end of the day, the Winchesters are still the Winchesters. They’ve got their family and they got their demons.

Check it out for yourself with this clip from the series:

Retelling Stories in New Mediums (Supernatural Anime)

I’ve been thinking a lot about retelling modern stories, especially with the debate a couple years ago about rebooting the Buffy movie (without Joss Whedon). Is it possible for good stories to be retold by different people in different settings especially?

Supernatural is getting a its own reboot, but in anime style. The new series combines and retells seasons 1 and 2 in a different way than the original TV series. It sounds promising that the creators can do what they want without fear of a budget. Without worrying about CGI and SFX (which are already amazing on the TV show) they can tell the story again in new ways.

While fans seem torn about Buffy Season 8, it seems that Season 9 might bring back some of the elements they were missing. Switching genres can be hard for fans who only know a story told in one genre (how many times have we heard book fans whine about movies being ‘told wrong’).

I for one, try to be a bit more open minded. I think good stories transcend a particular medium. Great stories can live comfortably in graphic novels, anime, books, TV, movies, heck.. even music. If the rabid fans can open their minds to a new interpretation they can really enjoy what the new story has to offer.

Want to see how it plays out for SPN? Check out this scene (that mirrors a scene in the finale of Season 2)
